Phil, Hand-Colored

Phil starts out in black and white. Drag through him to bring the color back, or repaint him a square at a time.

October 20, 2026

Phil starts out in black and white. Drag through him and the color comes back under the brush, one square at a time. Then start fooling with the controls. Pick a color off the rainbow bar and repaint him; turn the saturation up or down; make the ink heavier or lighter. Whatever you paint stays put until you press Reset.

Every square belongs to one of four ink sheets, each tilted to its own angle, so the paint lands in angled shards rather than smooth strokes. The Layers panel works like Illustrator’s: the eye shows or hides an ink, the brush says whether you’re painting on it. Try painting the cyan layer alone, then the yellow.

This is the last of three Phil pieces, after Phil, in Four Inks and Phil, Out of Register.

What I’d like to hear: once you’d brought him back, did you want to keep him as printed, or make him your own?
